We do offer an SSL option if you email support@mongohq.com

Hey I'm Ben, the other founder of MongoHQ.

Encryption is a common request for mongo and you can actually compile it with ssl support (scons --ssl), but it just isn't in the build by default.

Since most of the drivers support ssl already we leverage that and do offer encrypted mongo in a beta. If you would like to use an encrypted version of mongo in the cloud then shoot us an email to support@mongohq.com

thanks for the answer, that's great news!

yeah, I agree. I tried it and it was very interesting but the interaction was very bad. For instance, you can't peek then close and think ... once you peek you have to open all the way or it will move to next question.

I appreciate the imaginativeness of it but it isn't really an enjoyable interface for long term use.

now I find myself needing an ocarnia .... thanks

Future-you should fear not. The 20gb limit is a soft limit and we have many who have gone past it. It is really there for two reasons ...

1) To give people some reasonable expectations about how much data they should be putting on the plan given it is a multi-tenant server and they are sharing resources.

2) To make room for an expanded offering, both a larger high-availability shared plan, and a dedicated server plan.

If Heroku offers their own NoSQL alternative, they will put it on a different EC2 instance and have the same network latency so MongoHQ seems like an equal solution. They provide private IP addresses to connect to so it is the same as running it on your own separate EC2 instance. How does anyone separate their app and db server without creating latency in your opinion?
